Another (2012) – Horror Anime Style!

Horror comes in many packages. Movies, television, comics, any kind of medium you can dream up! One of my personal favorites is Anime. Animating horror gives it so many possibilities! The impossible gore and effects that just can’t be achieved in any other way. Not in an impactful way anyway. There are tons of great ones out there! Elfen Lied (2004), Midori: Shoujo Tsubaki (1992), Attack On Titan (2013)Higurashi: No Naku Koro Ni (2006)Corpse Party: Tortured Souls (2013). Be warned though, some of these will finish off whatever piece of your soul that hasn’t been desensitized yet. It’s far too late for me, so save yourselves! Or join me. You know what, join me anyway! Being damned can be lonely business.

Regardless of the direction your immortal soul is taking, here’s my current obsession! Another (2012).

One of the things I like best about these runs is they’re (mostly) one season. Beginning, middle, end. Another is no exception. Running just 12 episodes, it is over far too quickly! There’s quite a bit of mystery, and just downright creepiness, at it’s heart. It will keep you wondering who’s real, who exists and who doesn’t. What happened to the others and how do you break the curse!

Kōichi Sakakibara  transfers to Yomiyama Middle School and meets the curious Mei Misaki. He finds himself in a mystery revolving around students and people related to his class falling victim to gruesome, senseless deaths. The students turn on anyone not following the class rules. Is there a ghost among them? Do one of them not belong there? It’s a mystery that must be solved before time runs out and there are no students left in class 3-3.

I’ve watched the entire series twice now. The characters are fantastically built up. At times it feels like a slow burn, at least for the first couple episodes. Once the shit hits the fan though (Or umbrella hits the throat in this case) things start moving at a quicker and quicker pace. The gore and the kills are bloody! The violence and tension is superb as well.

As with pretty much all of the shows on this list, Another is adapted from the manga. And of course with anything else that’s been based on a book or comic, not everything can be included. Changes are made to people and places. Some parts of the story are compacted, and other parts stretched out. This anime definitely stands alone. While it’s not as bloody or as disturbing as some others, it’s an incredibly well told story with plenty of gore to be had. I would really place this as an excellent jumping off point into the world of Horror Anime!

How about you all? What have you seen that’s stuck with you? What are some of your favorites? Do you just think I’m full of crap? Comment and share!

Thanks for reading!
